Open the door, carefully stepping through the passage flanked by two curiosity cabinets, into a parallel universe where anything can happen; a chimera, a mere illusion. A place where the botanical and animal worlds collide, where nothing is certain. Creatures peer out through the darkness revealing themselves, their shadows creep across the floor. A new world inspired by the mystical and imaginary, from Alice in Wonderland to the cold depths of Narnia, is born.India Leire creates a world of reflection and contemplation that celebrates the natural environment through her hybrid sculptures. She takes her inspiration from fantasy worlds, such as the surreal imagery found in René Laloux’s 1970s psychedelic film ‘Planete Sauvage’, or the childlike fantasy of Alice in Wonderlands’ imaginary garden.
She draws from the Japanese aesthetics described in ‘In Praise of Shadows’ by Jun’ichiro Tanizaki. Using the shadows and the lighting as a tool and vital part in the installations of her sculptures. Finding beauty not in what is in front of the viewer, but more in what is hidden. She pushes each material as far as she can, exploring the possibilities of their positions and how the lighting can change their perception; giving them an illusion of life.
India Leire wants to invite the viewer into an imaginary universe where the animal and botanical collide to create hybrid forms that celebrate the natural world.
Born in 1990 in Canterbury (England), India Leire moved to Paris in 2008 to study at L’Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts de Paris.She developed her sculptural practise, expanding her fantastical universe under Giuseppe Penone and then under Patrice Alexandre. She obtained a Masters in Fine Art with full honours in 2013.
After leaving L’Ecole des Beaux Arts, India was accepted for a six month art residency at The Foundation B.A.D in Rotterdam, NL, during which time she exhibited multiple times including SCuLpTUUR at the R.A.M Foundation, NL as well as giving artist talks around the area, notably in the Fine Art School of The Hague, Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten. She has exhibited regularly in Paris since her degree in exhibitions such as Possibles d’un Monde Fragmente Le Palais des Beaux Arts, FR in 2014 and her first solo exhibition with La Micro Galerie, Curiosites in 2015. She was finalist for both Le Prix Keskar 2014 and Le Prix ICART 2015 which resulted in an exhibition in L’espace Pierre Cardin, FR as well as talking on France Culture about her work. Most recently she participated in Le Cop Fait Son 21 at le point FMR to promote ecology through art and music.

Ouvrez la porte. Marchez à petits pas au travers de ce passage formé par deux vitrines de curiosités. De l’autre côté, par-delà la lumière aveuglante, un univers parallèle : une chimère, une illusion. Un endroit où les mondes végétal et animal entrent en collision, où l’incertitude règne. La danse des ombres, au loin, sur le sol, semble prolonger la silhouette de créatures inquiétantes.
India Leire célèbre la nature en créant un monde contemplatif, peuplé de sculptures hybrides. Elle tire son inspiration de mondes imaginaires, à l’image de la « Planète sauvage » et de ses habitants surréalistes imaginés par René Laloux dans son film d’animation de 1973, ou du jardin fantastique d’ « Alice au Pays des Merveilles ».
En introduisant des jeux d’ombre et de lumière dans ses installations, India rend hommage aux idées esthétiques prônées par Jun’ichiro Tanizaki dans son éloge de l’obscurité. Elle souhaiterait ainsi que le spectateur puisse percevoir la beauté, non pas dans ce qui est en face de lui, mais dans ce qui lui est caché. Chaque matière est manipulée à l’extrême, de manière à faire naître une sculpture, à lui donner vie.

Elle a développé sa pratique sculpturale en élargissant son univers fantastique sous Giuseppe Penone, puis sous Patrice Alexandre. Au terme de sa maîtrise, obtenue avec les félicitations du jury en 2013, India Leire a travaillé six mois dans une résidence artistique de la fondation BAD à Rotterdam, période durant laquelle elle a notamment participé à l’exposition « SCuLpTUUR » organisée par la Fondation RAM, et animé des séminaires à l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts de La Haye, Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten.
A Paris, le public a pu découvrir ses œuvres à l’occasion de son projet « Possibles d’un Monde Fragmenté », présenté au Palais des Beaux-Arts en 2014, ou lors de sa première exposition solo, « Curiosités », commanditée par la Micro Galerie en 2015. Elle a été finaliste du Prix Keskar en 2014 et du Prix ICART en 2015, ce qui a donné lieu à une exposition dans l’espace Pierre Cardin. Dernièrement, India a participé au « Climat sur son 21 » au Point FMR, événement célébrant la cause environnementale à travers l’art et la musique.
