_____________
For our inaugural project, artéfact is exhibiting Harvest- two series of photo collages by acclaimed British artist, Jess Littlewood. Future Plans is a series of nightscapes illuminated by omnipresent geometrical cut-outs of the aurora borealis. These altered worlds are filled with enigmatic imagery- unknown geological sites and artefacts that evoke the alternative artistic communes formed in the 60’s and 70’s. Exhibited alongside Future Plans is the Shipwreck series – two works that invite the viewer to peer into window scenes of an abandoned shipwreck – a blazing fire and damaged boats being the only signs that life once inhabited this landscape. The windows are set against antiquated scenes of deserted land as if foretelling the landscape’s inevitable future void of life.
Littlewood is commenting on the friction created between nature and mankind in our constant attempt to create the ultimate utopia. The human mark on these landscapes is evident and yet our presence unseen as if we have abandoned our cause in understanding its inevitable failure. The artist is interested in examining the nature of human knowledge and its ability to render us blindly reliant on the supernatural and even extremist ideals.
Littlewood’s artistic process includes appropriation and digital collage. Once she has carefully harvested images (often sourced from Google) they are adapted, archived and assimilated into her collages- often used multiple times. In doing this, the artist is giving the images histories and meaning beyond their current context. This act of harvesting is the core of Littlewood’s practice and the central theme behind this exhibition.
